There are many mushrooms which closely resemble porcini though it is not clear if they are merely variants or actually represent different species. Perhaps both explanations will be found to be true. DNA studies may shed some light on this complex of mushrooms or, it is possible, may create further confusion. I, for one, will not allow any such haggling to interfere with my enjoyment of this wonderful fungus.

Many of the boletes will stain various colors when handled—blue, green, brown, red, yellow, purple and black. This is referred to as “bruising” and may occur even though the specimen is carefully handled. Blue-staining boletes, although some are good edibles, should be avoided by the beginner because some will make you ill, mainly gastrointestinal disturbances. Also, don’t eat any bolete whose pores are red or orange for the same reason.
